University Center Underground

University of Houston

Houston, Texas

The 43,000-square foot University Center Underground annex on the University of Houston Campus was devastated by floodwaters from Tropical Storm Allison in June of 2001. The finishes, furniture and sections of walls were completely destroyed and subsequently removed from the building.

PDG Architects worked alongside University Center staff and student leadership to restore and renovate the Underground annex, following FEMA guidelines and within an expedited schedule.

Life safety system and egress paths were upgraded to bring the building in compliance with current building codes and Texas Accessibility Standards. Mechanical systems were tested and re-commissioned, and underutilized areas were reconfigured for new users.
