Astronaut Memorial Grove

NASA Johnson Space Center

Houston, Texas

In 1986, a small grove of oak trees was planted at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in tribute to the astronauts who had perished in the Shuttle Challenger accident. Since then, the grove is the site of an annual memorial service to honor the astronaut corps; a tree is added each time an astronaut passes away.

PDG Architects assisted NASA in the development of a master plan for the grove to create a fitting memorial to the service of our Astronauts. The design creates a sense of place, incorporating the grove into a sheltered, contemplative outdoor space that promotes repose and calm reflection.

To meet JSC’s construction requirements, the project has been designed to be implemented in a sequence of phases.
